Official or not
Rust's in-game Official tab against everything elseOfficial servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Server Index keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.
This page counts the people on public Rust servers at 27 Oct 2026, 17:40 UTC. You get the total now, the shape of the last day, then the longer record of the past months. After that the same players are filed by game mode, by modded or vanilla, by gather rate, group size, region and how many days since the wipe. One entry covers the concentration: how few servers hold most of the players. See also the server list for every entry A to Z.

Questions
4 enquiries on file, answered by the catalogue.
Enquiry 01How many people are playing Rust right now?
Live at the top of the page: 96,400 on 11,876 public servers, last checked 27 Oct 2026, 17:40 UTC. The figure is a count of players each server reports, so it moves through the day and after every wipe.
Enquiry 02Why does this total differ from Steam's?
Steam lists anyone with the game open, including menus, loading screens and servers that do not publish themselves. This index only counts public servers, which is also what lets it file the same players by type. The two figures measure different things, so expect a gap.
Enquiry 03When are the most players online?
The peak of the day is usually the European evening, with a second rise for North America. The hour-by-hour table on this page shows the busiest hour in UTC over the past week, so you can plan a session in your own time zone.
Enquiry 04Is Rust busier on modded or vanilla servers?
In total, modded servers carry more players, but they also outnumber vanilla many times over. The per-server averages sit beside the totals above, so compare those before drawing a conclusion. The split is live and updates as servers report.
